Pachhai Vaarana Perumal Temple

Pachhai Vaarana Perumal temple is an old temple in Nazaratpet near poondhamallee,

The Sthala-purana of this temple is connected to a story in the Mahabharata. According to that story, when the Pandavas found it difficult to defeat the Drona who was fighting for the Kauravas, as they aware of Drona`s great affection for his son Ashvatthama, Bhima killed an elephant named Ashvatthama. Consequently that was told to Drona that Ashvatthama was dead. When Drona wanted to confirm this statement with Dharma who was known to speak only truth, he stated that Ashvatthama was dead, but added very softly that it was the elephant, so that drona could not hear it. Drona was shocked by hearing that his son is dead. He bent on giving up his life, which became easy for Pandavas to kill him. Dharma wanted to come out of this sin, hence he prayed Naraada and performed a Yajna at this Kshetra. Out of the sacrificial fire, Lord Krishna in the form of a green elephant appeared before him and blessed him.

Another importance of this place is it is the birth place of Swami Mudaliandan. Swami Mudaliandan was born in 1027 A.D to Anandanarayana Dheekshidar and Nachiyaramman. Anandanarayana Dheekshidar did not have any children for a long time. He undertook a yatra to Thiruvengadam to worship Lord Thiruvengadamudayan and pray for a child. On his way at Thiruninravor, where he stayed overnight Sriramar (Anandanarayana Dheekshidar’s thiruvaradana perumal) appeared in his dream and instructed that he need not undertake yatra to Thiruvengadam as Thiruanandazvan ( Adi Shesha, Five headed Serpent, on whom The Lord reclines ) has taken birth as Ramanujar in Sriperumbudur and that HE (Lord) himself will be born as his son to serve Sri Ramanuja. Thus Mudaliandan is an amsam of Lord Rama

Lord Vishnu (Pacchai Vaarana Perumal) in seated posture is the main diety of this temple. The Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in the temple as Amritavalli Thayar. There is a sanctum for Rama, which is seen with Devi Sita and Lakshmana. A separate sanctum for Mudaliyandan is of particular importance.
